CHAPTER THIRTY

BEHIND CLOSED DOORS

Coleman & Morris & Associates Law Firm, Chicago, Illinois, United States

Leaning forward, Paris squinted at Gen, like trying to see her behind the disguise. “Who are you?”

Gen glanced at the closed door, having watched as the five money-hungry lawyers left. She focused back on Paris. “Is it safe to talk in here? Like from dangerous people who are looking for you? Like from magical spells?”

Paris grinned wide, picking up the dog and holding him close to her chest. “It’s you, isn’t it, Gen? Tell me it is.”

Gen nodded slightly, still afraid about talking too candidly there.

“It’s safe to talk in here,” Paris stated with confidence. “Due to the legal nature of what we do at the law firm, no one can spy on this room in particular or overhear things. It’s one of the reasons that I was assigned to this location and given this job. There are a lot of security measures.”

Gen sighed, grateful that they could speak freely. “Oh, what a relief. And yes, it’s me. As you can tell, I’m disguised and I have an anti-tracking potion covering my trail so I haven’t put your cover at risk. However, both the disguise and the potion are going to wear off within the hour, so we don’t have long to talk.”

Paris nodded, putting the little Chihuahua on the table. Faraday shook, like a dog does after a bath, and then started panting, also seeming relieved and much happier by this revelation. “What’s going on?”

“The council sent me,” Gen began, talking quickly. “Subner has a way of tracking down Sophia’s sword, which should be on her and hopefully will lead us to her. But to find the sword, I need personal objects from you, Liv, Clark and Rose. And they must be very important to you.”

Paris brightened with a smile. “This is such great news. I’m so happy to hear that there’s a way to find Sophia. I knew you would save us.”

“I’m doing everything that I can,” Gen said, checking the time. “Please tell me that you have an object that means a lot to you, with you. I need it right away for the tracking spell.”

“Of course.” Paris pulled a silver chain that was tucked under her white button-up shirt up. She reached around and unfastened it from behind her neck and held it up. Gen saw that it was a silver heart-shaped locket. “This was given to me by John Carraway, who acted as my guardian most of my childhood while I was separated from my parents. It saved my life once and it still means a lot to me. It will definitely help with the tracking spell.”

“Great.” Gen took the locket, finding it heavier than she anticipated. It definitely felt imbued with magic. “Now, I just need something from Rose. The sword apparently was fueled by the power of four Beaufonts, which is what I need to track it down.”

Paris nodded, seeming familiar with this information. “Yes, my grandmother, Guinevere, used the symbolism of her four children at the time the sword was made to charge the weapon.
